Do candidates get notified when I change their status?

No. Advance, Hold, Reject, and Hired are internal statuses only. Truffle never auto-sends a status-change email to the candidate. If you want to tell them a decision, send it yourself (over email or through your ATS).

For employers worried that changing a status will trigger an unwanted email to the candidate.

No. Changing a candidate's status in Truffle never sends them an email. Advance, Hold, Reject, and Hired are internal statuses used for your dashboard, filters, and team-review workflow. Truffle only sends candidates the interview lifecycle emails (invitation, 24h reminder, 72h reminder, completion confirmation). Any decision-stage communication. "we'd like to talk to you further," "we're moving in a different direction". Comes from you, not Truffle.

What Truffle sends candidates

Automatic emails from Truffle cover the interview flow only:

  • Invitation. When you invite them or when they apply via a shared link.

  • 24-hour reminder. If they started but haven't finished.

  • 72-hour reminder. Final automatic nudge.

  • Completion confirmation. When they submit their interview.

That's it. No status-change emails. No rejection emails. No "you've been advanced" emails. See What emails does Truffle send to candidates?.

What statuses do, and don't

Statuses are an internal tool for your team.

  • They filter your dashboard. Each status has its own tab (For Review, Advance, On Hold, Rejected, Hired).

  • They roll up into reporting. Bulk actions, exports, and team-review stats use them.

  • They don't touch the candidate. No email, no profile change on their side, nothing visible.

A candidate has no awareness of their status inside Truffle. If you reject them silently, they simply hear nothing back. If you want to close the loop with the candidate, send that communication yourself.

How to tell candidates your decision

Most teams do this outside Truffle, either from their personal inbox or through their ATS. A few patterns we see:

  • Email directly from your inbox. Simple and personal. The candidate already has your address from the automatic emails.

  • Send through your ATS. If Truffle is pushing candidates into Greenhouse, Lever, Workable, etc., most teams use the ATS's disposition emails as their communication channel.

  • Custom email templates on the invitation side. Truffle's custom email templates cover the invitation and reminder flow, not decision emails.

If you want Truffle to do this

Automated rejection or advance emails aren't on the current roadmap. The choice is deliberate. Decision emails are one of the highest-stakes things your company sends, and auto-sending them based on a dashboard click has a high cost when it goes wrong (wrong candidate clicked, decision reversed, template sent with placeholders unfilled). Keeping the human in the loop for those decisions is the current design.
