For employers building the question list for a one-way video interview.
There are three ways to add questions to a video interview: browse Truffle's built-in catalog, write your own, or use AI-suggested questions generated from your position description. Questions live in the Video Interview section of Step 3 in the Create Interview wizard. You can add up to 10, mix approaches freely, and edit any question after the position is live.
How to add questions
To add questions, open the Video Interview section on Step 3 and use any of the three methods.
On Step 3: Configure interview, open the Video Interview section.
Pick one of the three methods below. You can mix them in the same interview.
Review the full list, reorder with drag-and-drop, and move on.
Three ways to add a question
Browse catalog. Pick from Truffle's library, organized by category (Goals, Style, Skills, Behavior, Teamwork, Culture). Each catalog question is field-tested across many roles.
Write a custom question. Type your own. Truffle runs a compliance check as you type and flags questions that may be problematic under fair-hiring standards. See the compliance-check section below.
Use AI suggestions. When you open Step 3 for a new position, Truffle proposes about 5 questions based on your position description. Edit or remove any you don't want, keep the ones that fit.
A typical setup is 4–6 questions total: two from the catalog, two custom, one or two AI-suggested.
Why 4–6 questions is the sweet spot
You can add up to 10 questions, but you usually don't want to. More questions = longer interview = lower candidate completion rate. Fewer questions = less signal to evaluate. Most positions land well at 4 to 6: enough to cover the fit dimensions that matter, not so many that candidates drop off before finishing.
If you need more than 10, it's a sign the interview is trying to do too many things. Consider whether some questions belong in qualification checks (pre-interview filter), the Assessments components (for personality or workplace-preference signals), or the later in-person interview.
The question compliance check
Every custom question you write goes through an automatic check that flags phrasing that could be read as referencing a protected characteristic.
Pass. The question is clear; no flag shown.
Warn. The question may be phrased in a way that's problematic; Truffle suggests a rewrite. You can proceed anyway if you disagree.
Fail. The question references a protected characteristic (age, race, religion, disability, pregnancy, etc.). Truffle strongly recommends rephrasing and blocks activation of the position until it's resolved.
The compliance check is a soft guardrail: it flags things to rephrase, it doesn't make legal guarantees. For legal certainty, run questions past your employment counsel.
Editing questions on a live position
Questions can be edited after the position is live. From the Video Interview section, click the three-dot menu next to any question to:
Edit text. Change the wording.
Replace with catalog question. Swap in a different catalog question.
Add video. Record a per-question video prompt (see below).
Remove. Delete the question from the interview.
Changes apply to new candidates only. Candidates who've already completed the interview aren't affected: you keep the original question and response visible on their profile.
Per-question video prompts
You can record a short video of yourself asking each question. Candidates see the video before they start recording their answer. It's optional but it personalizes the interview: candidates report that hearing the actual hiring manager ask the question makes the experience feel more real.
To add a per-question video: click the three-dot menu on a question, select Add video, and record in-browser or upload a pre-recorded file. Per-question videos are automatically copied when you duplicate the position.
