What qualification questions do

Qualification questions appear before the video interview. Candidates answer quick factual questions like "Are you authorized to work in Canada?" or "How many years of B2B sales experience do you have?"

Qualification questions help you:

  • Identify candidates who meet basic requirements at a glance.

  • Filter your candidate list with one click.

  • Reduce time spent reviewing mismatched applications.

Important: Qualification questions don't reject candidates. All applicants continue to the video interview regardless of their answers. The questions simply flag who meets your criteria so you can prioritize your review.

Choose how to add qualification questions

You have two options:

  • Generate with AI: Truffle suggests qualification checks based on your job details. This is the fastest option and works well for most roles.

  • Create your own: Write custom questions specific to your needs. Use this when you need questions Truffle didn't generate.

Qualification question types and when to use them

Truffle supports three question types. Choose based on how candidates will answer.

1. Yes/No questions

  • When to use: Simple must-have or must-not requirements.

  • Candidate experience: One tap to answer.

  • Example: "Are you legally authorized to work in Canada?"

  • Pass criteria: Yes = Meets, No = Flag for review.

2. Numeric questions

  • When to use: Years of experience, number of direct reports, quota attainment, or other measurable requirements.

  • Candidate experience: Text field for entering a number.

  • Example: "How many direct reports have you managed?"

  • Pass criteria: Set a minimum or maximum. For example, β‰₯ 3 reports.

Select list questions

  • When to use: Limited set of options like certifications, education level, or specific tools.

  • Candidate experience: Dropdown menu.

  • Example: "Select your highest Salesforce certification."

  • Pass criteria: Define which selections meet your requirements. For example, Administrator, Developer, or Architect certifications qualify.

How qualification questions appear in review

When you open a candidate profile, the Qualification checks section shows all answers in the Profile tab.

Alert banner: If a candidate fails any qualification criteria, a red alert banner appears at the top of the section. It states "Candidate does not meet required qualifications" and shows how many criteria they failed.

For example: "This candidate has failed 1 of 4 required qualification criteria. Review the specific requirements below."

Visual indicators for each question:

  • Green checkmark: The candidate's answer meets your criteria.

  • Red X: The candidate's answer doesn't meet your criteria.

Each qualification question displays:

  • The question text.

  • The candidate's response below it (e.g., "Response: Yes").

  • A visual indicator (checkmark or X) on the left.

Best practices for qualification questions

  • Keep questions factual. Ask about licenses, location, availability, or certifications. Avoid questions that could introduce bias.

  • Limit to three to five questions. Too many qualification questions slow down your review and create friction for candidates.

  • Phrase so Yes is the desirable answer. Questions like "Are you authorized to work in the US?" are easier to scan than "Do you require visa sponsorship?" because Yes always means qualified.

When to skip qualification questions

Qualification questions work well for most roles, but you can skip them if:

  • You have a small talent pool. For niche roles like specialized researchers, every application deserves full review.

  • You're hiring early-career candidates. Campus recruiting or entry-level roles often have minimal hard requirements.

  • You're posting internal transfers. HR has already validated eligibility for current employees.

Qualification questions are always optional. You can activate your interview without adding them.

Edit qualification questions after publishing

You can add, remove, or change qualification questions anytime, even after candidates start applying.
